THE TEDDY BEARS’ PICNIC
This quintessentially AMERICAN song dates back to an American composer John Walter Bratton, in 1907, and the lyrics where added by Irish songwriter, in 1932, Jimmy Kennedy.
In the above version, we have the late Jerry Garcia, of The Grateful Dead, and David Grisman provide a melodic and paced version. of many different recordings, that include a best seller by Bing Crosby, back in the 1930’s.
So about now, you must be asking yourselves, has Uncle Russ lost it completely?!
No! In these halcyon days of mid summer, to quote the lyrics of another essentially American song called ‘SUMMERTIME’, from Porgy & Bess, composed to George and Ira Gershwin, “…the livin’ is easy, the fish are junmpin’, and the cotton is high, your daddy’s rich and your momma’s so good lookin’…”
Recently, Zija® International’s Founder, Ken Brailsford warned of “complacency” among some of you whom have had some measure of both physical and financial success, resting on your laurels.
Ken is correct, and you better get your proverbial backsides in gear, to quote my father-in-law, Augusto, “immediately, if not sooner”!

So back to Bratton’s 1907 tune. It was inspired by a hunting trip in Mississippi in 1902, in which the then 26th President Of the United States Of America, Theodore Roosevelt, refused to shoot a lassoed to a tree and exhausted black bear. The incident was championed in a famous, at the time, Washington Post cartoon, because Roosevelt believed in fair play, and this would have been completely unsportsmanlike to shoot. The bear was set free.
Within 6 months, an entrepreneur had imported several thousand stuffed toy bears from Germany, and thus the cultural icon of Teddy Bears was born, and became the rage for children of all ages, leading to the classic song.
Timing, product, opportunity, duplication, honesty, and ‘going where your competition is not’, are among my rules to business acumen and success, and they should be yours also.
