Summary: In a study involving data collected from 2,524 adults in the United States, between the ages of 20 and 85 years, elevated depressive symptoms were found to be inversely associated with folate status, especially among women (fully adjusted odds ratio = 0.37), while no significant associations were found for vitamin B12 or tHcy. Among subjects aged 50 years or older, tHcy was positively associated with elevated depressive symptoms (fully adjusted odds ratio = 3.01). The authors conclude, “Future interventions to improve mental health outcomes among U.S. adults should take into account dietary and other factors that would increase levels of serum folate.”
