Eating More Fruits and Vegetables May Help Protect Against Acute Coronary Syndrome

GOT ZIJA®?!

~ Uncle Russ

Summary: In a prospective study involving 53,383 men and women, aged 50 to 64 years, results indicate that higher intakes of fruits and vegetables may be associated with a reduced risk of acute coronary syndrome. During a median follow-up of 7.7 years, 1075 incident cases of acute coronary syndrome (ACS) were identified. Using Cox proportional hazards models adjusted for potential confounders, higher fruit and vegetable intake was associated with a tendency towards lower risk of ACS in men and women, with the inverse association being stronger in men than in women. Notably, fruit juice intake (particularly, apple juice) was associated with a reduced risk of ACS in men, but with an increased risk of ACS in women. Thus, the authors of this study conclude, “The present results provide some support for previously observed inverse associations between fresh fruit intake, particularly apples, and ACS risk.”
